ten things four

1) the aya sofya, thrice in as many days.  can't get enough of that dome.

2) beshiktash futbol matches - walking the fine line between rejoicing and rioting, learning turkish team chants and later discovering that they are actually quite vulgar, shooting a confetti gun, and doing it all with a bir-lira kebab hanging out of my mouth

3) local boy makes good

4) this rabbit told me that i was destined for greatness, and that intestinal irritation looms in my near future

5) the love hate relationship that i have developed with mustafa kemal ataturk.  modernizer, cult figure, father to a nation, his blue eyes everywhere, secularist, anti-seperatist, embalmed and enshrined - that's all fine.  but it is ataturk who outlawed the fez - a fact that, for me at least, complicates his legacy.

6) iggy pop's passenger

7)
fried intestines, too-too-fresh mussels, liver on a skewer - three things recently added to my "list of foods that i forced myself to learn to enjoy and i am happier because of it."

8) my flatmate's name - devriim umut aslan, which translated means 'revolution hope lion' was illegal until 2001.

9) baby, if i'm not at home you can find me at the gym or the gun show. kfc tonight? call the cell.

10) i know a lot of people now who are kurdish.  it took me a while (about two months) to realize that 'kurdish' is kurdish, like the people in the news from iraq.  i'm not sure if i should be ashamed of my failure to quickly link my new friends with ongoing and quite local sectarian violence, or not.
